  • How Celebrity Sports Showdown Came to Be

I hear this question many times, “Why have celebrities in the game?”?  Usually my first answer is “Why not?”.  When we were creating the “wannabe” characters, we were already drawing inspirations from celebrities.  The “wannabe” characters were meant to be fun and satirical.  Our meetings usually consisted of “remember this guy who sang that song in the 80’s”…you know, typical office-fare dialog.

Around the office, you’ll find people talking about pop-culture topics all the time.  Well, on one of those days, Dave McCarthy (Exec Producer) and I were talking about some old TV shows like Battle of the Network Stars.  Dave then says to me, “Imagine if Kristi Yamaguchi was in the game!”   Done deal.

We had some pretty good brainstorming sessions of possible celebrities, but we really liked the idea of having celebrity athletes and musicians as the roster of stars for the game.  I’ll admit, it’s an odd concept -  but then again, the team that made this game could have been the extras from The Office.  So “odd” is “normal” for the environment that I’m in.  I think that’s why the celebrities work for this game.  It’s a fun party game where we string non-traditional sports activities with non-traditional competitors.  Why not see if Keith Urban is better at Rock Climbing than Mia Hamm?  Who wouldn’t want to see Avril and Fergie jousting 80 ft above water?  Have you ever wondered how LeAnn Rimes would do in a Kayak race?  I’m sure these are deep questions that come up at any family dinner.  And now you have a game that hopes to answer those questions.

Anyway, I gotta go.  There’s a stack of celebrity gossip mags that my wife bought from the grocery store that I have to read.
